Bangladesh's second city and busiest seaport, where the Karnaphuli meets the Bay of Bengal: Patenga at sunset, Foy's Lake, mezban feasts and the road to the hills.
Chattogram is the second city of Bangladesh and its busiest port, set where the Karnaphuli river meets the Bay of Bengal, with green hills on its edge. Many people still call it Chittagong: the official name changed in 2018. Shah Amanat International Airport (CGP) is at South Patenga, close to the beach.
Try mezban, the traditional feast of hot beef curry with white rice, and kala bhuna, beef cooked with mustard oil and spices.
Chattogram is the starting point for the lakes and hills of Rangamati and Bandarban, and for Cox's Bazar further down the coast. Ask us to arrange hotels and transfers for a few days in the south east.
With a Bangladeshi passport you need no visa. Relatives and friends visiting on another passport should check Bangladesh's entry rules for that passport when they book and again before they travel.
It is hot for much of the year: drink bottled or treated water, take care in the sun and guard against mosquito bites with long sleeves and repellent.
The currency is the Bangladeshi taka (BDT). Keep cash handy for markets, rickshaws and small shops.

Dress modestly, with shoulders and legs covered, as Bangladesh is a mainly Muslim country. Local dress codes matter even more during Ramadan, when opening hours of shops and restaurants can also change.
