Bangladesh's capital and our home: Mughal Old Dhaka on the Buriganga, painted rickshaws, kacchi biryani and the busy newer districts of Gulshan, Banani and Dhanmondi.
Dhaka is where we live and work, so this guide starts at home. Our office is in Banani, one of the newer districts with Gulshan and Dhanmondi, full of shopping centres, hotels and restaurants. The older city lies to the south along the Buriganga river, a maze of lanes, bazaars and historic buildings.
Begin at Ahsan Manzil, the pink palace of the Nawabs of Dhaka and now a museum. Walk on to Lalbagh Fort, begun in 1678 and never finished, and to the Star Mosque. At Sadarghat, take a boat out to see the river traffic up close.
Leave room for kacchi biryani and for street snacks such as fuchka.
Cycle rickshaws, CNG auto rickshaws, buses and taxis carry most journeys, and MRT Line 6, the city's first metro line, opened in December 2022. Agree rickshaw and CNG fares before you set off. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) is about 15 km north of the centre, so allow extra time on the road.

With a Bangladeshi passport you need no visa to come home. Relatives and friends visiting on another passport should check Bangladesh's entry rules for that passport when they book and again shortly before they travel.
Dhaka is hot for much of the year, so drink bottled or treated water and take care in the sun. Mosquitoes are common: cover up and use repellent. If you have a heart or lung condition, keep an eye on local air quality.
The currency is the Bangladeshi taka (BDT). Keep some cash for rickshaws, markets and small shops.

Dress modestly, with shoulders and legs covered, as Bangladesh is a mainly Muslim country. Local dress codes matter even more during Ramadan, when opening hours of shops and restaurants can also change.
Cycle rickshaws carry a large share of journeys, alongside auto rickshaws known locally as CNGs, buses and taxis. The city's first metro line, MRT Line 6, opened in December 2022. Agree a rickshaw or CNG fare before you set off.

Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, falls on 14 April each year in Bangladesh and is a public holiday. In Dhaka it begins at dawn with a gathering under the banyan tree at Ramna, and a colourful procession organised by fine arts students follows.
